What’s in a Name: Okeechobee

The history of Lake Okeechobee goes back to its original inhabitants of the Mayami tribe. Its name translates to “Big Water.” Its environmental beauty and economic significance led to both the City of Okeechobee and Okeechobee County being named after it.
