Off The Beaten Path – Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens
Located in Port Orange, the Dunlawton Sugar Mill Gardens has a rich history dating back to before the statehood of Florida. It was originally a plantation for sugar, cotton, and rice. The plantation was burned down during the Seminole Wars and was used as a camp for the Confederates during the Civil War. It was also the site of an early tourist attraction in the 50s called Bongoland. Today it is a 10 acre botanical garden owned by Volusia County where visitors can see the remains of the sugar mill along with a variety of plants and trails.
