Historical Markers: St. Augustine Cathedral

The St. Augustine Cathedral is the oldest Catholic parish in the United States. Its history dates back to 1565 when Spanish explorer, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, and his men landed on the shores and constructed a church to celebrate mass. It has been burnt and rebuilt multiple times throughout its history. Today, it is still an operating parish where visitors can experience its iconic European-styled architecture.
