Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, formerly known as John U. Lloyd State Park, was originally a segregated beach for Broward County’s black residents. Situated in Dania Beach, the beach initially had no access via roads until Civil Rights leaders, Dr. Von Mizell and Eula Johnson, led a series of wade-in protests at Ft. Lauderdale’s white beaches in 1961 which ultimately led to the integration of Broward County’s beaches. The beach became an official state park in 1974 and its name was changed to honor Dr. Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson in 2016.
