Capitol Update is a weekly review of state government. Topics this week include:

  • The Florida Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a challenge to a law that imposes personal fines and penalties on city and county commissioners who approve gun ordinances that don’t conform to state law.
  • Governor Ron DeSantis signed bills that provide educational and career benefits to service members and veterans, but vetoed SB 2508 which would have modified water management in South Florida.
  • The Public Service Commission rejected a request by Environmental Utilities to replace septic systems with sewer lines in Little Gasparilla and other barrier islands, agreeing with more than a thousand residents who said installing sewers would wreck the natural beauty of the islands and kill wildlife.
