7/23/25 Capitol Update Extended – New Generic Drugs May Temporarily Reduce State Pharmacy Coverage Costs

The state’s pharmacy management company, OptumRx, told state economists that the cost of drug coverage for state employees may not be as high as expected over the next two years because many expensive drugs are coming off patent, so cheaper generics are becoming available. However, costs are expected to go up after that as expensive new drugs go on the market.
