A jury found Jackson guilty of the first-degree murder of Debra Pearce, who was fatally stabbed in 2004. The trial court sentenced him to death, and this Court affirmed the judgment and death sentence on direct appeal. Jackson filed a postconviction motion in the trial court and was granted a new penalty phase under Hurst v. State. However, the trial court denied the guilt-phase claims. Jackson now appeals, challenging the denial of certain guilt-phase claims. Jackson has also filed a habeas petition alleging ineffective assistance of appellate counsel on direct appeal.
