From the birth of the Seminole Nation to the legacy of one of the state’s only black schools in its day, the area of Gainesville and Alachua County witnessed many historic events in Florida history.  And just beyond the gates of the historic University of Florida, there is a large preserve that became the state’s first public prairie in 1971.
