Capitol Update is a weekly review of state government. Topics this week include:
- Governor Ron DeSantis demonstrated rapid COVID-19 tests now on the way to Florida by the millions, and suspended any penalties local governments give out for violations of mandatory mask ordinances.
- Miami-Dade and Broward County school officials agreed to reopen all brick-and-mortar schools earlier than they’d planned, after the Education Commissioner warned that state funds were at stake if the districts opened later.
- News laws that took effect October 1 include a ban on shark finning and the creation of new license plates honoring African-American sororities and fraternities.
