Job Description:

With offices and a studio located on the 9th floor of the state Capitol building in Tallahassee, FL, The Florida Channel (TFC) produces programming covering all three branches of state government and is Florida’s primary source for live, unedited coverage of the Governor and Cabinet, the Legislature, and the Supreme Court.  TFC programming is carried by PBS stations throughout Florida as one of their digital sub-channels and delivered statewide by satellite to other program distributors. Live streaming of as many as (14) simultaneous events and archived content are available online at thefloridachannel.org.

Responsibilities

Serves as Associate Producer for Capitol Update and other daily and weekly news programs – duties include but are not limited to assisting Assignment Manager, News Director, and Sr. Producer in researching stories, overseeing rundowns, incorporating visual elements such as full-screen graphics, reviewing information for content and accuracy and effectively timing live newscasts. Demonstrates good organization and communication skills to carry out assignments with limited supervision.

Serves as Reporter for Capitol Update and other TFC programming – duties include but are not limited to being proactive in researching, developing, and following thru with ideas, writing clear and concise scripts on deadline, interviewing individuals in a professional manner, and compiling information for graphics or other visual elements used to effectively complete a program or program segment.

Maintains records and archives program materials (scripts, video, research). Transcribes recordings and develops documentation related to program production and/or broadcast techniques/formats unique to TFC; adheres to and implements generally accepted creative and technical principles of broadcast production, along with procedures and principles established by TFC for legislative and public affairs program production.

Provides production and administrative support, including but not limited to running teleprompter for various programs and assisting front desk personnel. Some travel is required, and the ability to work a flexible schedule as needed—other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related area and one year of appropriate experience in a professional broadcast environment. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

  • Ability to travel as required and work a flexible schedule that may include weekends and evenings.
  • Strong writing and research skills.
  • Experience writing scripts on deadline.
  • The ability to think creatively and carry out specific program concepts after receiving general guidance – but with limited supervision.
  • On-camera experience in a professional newsroom environment.
  • Attention to detail; effective time-management and organizational skills.
  • The ability to work as part of a team on tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with fast-changing situations are necessary, often in public.
  • A valid Florida or Georgia driver’s license or the ability to obtain a license at time of hire.
