Florida’s journey to becoming part of the United States of America was a long one.  Spain once controlled the territory, and so did the British. It was more than three hundred years after Juan Ponce de Leon put it on the map in 1513 that the territory stopped changing hands. In this edition of Florida Remembers, Florida Crossroads looks back at the general- turned president that claimed the territory for the U.S., the wars that followed and the final battle that set in stone the location of Florida’s Capitol.
