09/05/2014 Florida Crossroads – Vanishing Beauty: Saving Florida’s Endangered Butterflies

Florida is home to two of the rarest insects in the world, both of them butterflies.  The Miami Blue once flew all over the coastal parts of the state, but today only a few butterflies remain on remote islands off Key West.  In 2012, only a handful of Schaus Swallowtail butterflies were spotted in the wild.  State researchers are working with federal officials to understand what drove the butterflies away and have launched programs to save both species from extinction.
